Statement from Arjen Slooter, University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht:
"A trial of rivastigmine add-on therapy for the treatment of delirium in ICU patients has been halted after 104 of the intended 440 patients had been included. The trial's Data Safety Monitoring Board recommended halting the trial because of safety concerns after continuous serious adverse event (SAE) monitoring showed higher mortality in the treatment group than in the placebo group (p=0.07). A detailed data analysis will soon be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Six hospitals in the Netherlands participated in the trial, which was led by researcher Arjen Slooter, MD PhD from University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht."
